The parents of a Central Florida soccer star who lost her left leg in an accident during a car wash fundraiser said her condition continues to improve and she is in good spirits.
Kathleen and David McMahon said Breanna McMahon will have an eighth operation this week to apply skin grafts to close the wounds on her leg. In the coming months, the McMahons said she will have surgeries to attempt improve the sensation and function in her right foot and leg.
"When she's awake, she's got a great, positive attitude," David McMahon said. "She's looking forward to challenges ahead and she's got a lot of support from her friends – they come and see her daily – and that's helped her a lot as well."
Breanna McMahon, who attends Freedom High School, and her teammates held a car wash fundraiser in Winter Park earlier this month for their soccer team. A 17-year-old driver accidentally backed her car into McMahon and pinned her against a wall.
The McMahons said the teenager would try to attend her high school homecoming and prom. They also said the soccer star is already thinking about prosthetics and getting back on the field.
"She's not having a pity party. She's looking at this, you know we've talked a lot, and we've decided this is a detour not a dead end. She's committed to some how, some way make it back to college level." Kathleen McMahon said.
