Glaze Helps Lake Howell Snap 17-Game Losing Streak
Lake Howell Senior Kyle Glaze remembers vividly the last time the Silverhawks won a football game, it was two years ago.
"I was a sophomore. We had a different coaching staff, we had Coach Kemper then. Our last win was Pine Ridge, we we're supposed to lose that game too."
Lake Howell won that game 42-27 but the program wouldn't see a win after that for awhile. The Silverhawks lost the last four games that season, went 0-10 a year ago, and started off 2009 0-3. That all stopped Friday night.
"When they scored the first one I thought this might be one of those where they score and we don't come back. They scored then we scored again."
Glaze who witnessed the 17 game losing streak, helped the Silverhawks ride out the storm, and put an end to the ugliness. The senior stepped up rushing for 118 yards and three touchdowns.
"It was my o-line that was blocking for me. I had some good runs but they had blocks up front, it was just me trying to get through and get in the endzone."
His trips to the endzone paid off as Lake Howell tasted something unfamiliar, victory. A 34-28 win over district rival Hagerty. Something Glaze won't forget.
"It was the best feeling ever. This is what we had wanted. This is how we play our game. This is what our coaches had been wanting. To get this win was huge for our program, to get back and show everyone this is how we play, to get back to the playoffs."
Playoffs? Playoffs? Yes, despite being 1-3, the lone win puts the Silverhawks atop the district standing but Glaze knows the team can't get complacent.
"It really means a lot to us but we can't go into the game thinking now that we're at the top we can beat whoever we want and do whatever we want. We have to beat the teams at the beginning and shut them down the rest of the game. We've got to go into the next game with the same intensity on Friday."
The Silverhawks will face Liberty on the road Friday night as they look to win two in a row. Glaze has a message for the doubters.
"People who went to the game on Friday know we turned things around, all we said was come to the game. Everyone wanted to win this game."
Congratulations to the Lake Howell football team on their big win and Kyle Glaze for his performance as this week's Spotlight Athlete.
