Lovaglio And Rivers Wreak Havoc For Winter Park
The dynamic duo helped lead the Wildcats to their first ever boys basketball state title.
Double Double Days For Lovaglio
Winter Park won their first ever basketball state title Saturday night and one member of that team came up big offensively and on the defensive glass.
6'4 senior Robert Lovaglio tallied double doubles in both the state semifinal and championship games. Against Boyd Anderson he picked up 13 points and 12 boards and then followed it up with a 17 point ten rebound performance against Dr. Phillips in the 6A final.
That defensive prowess isn't something new. This season Lovaglio set the school record for rebounds in a career with a staggering 817.
An outstanding four years as a Wildcat, he hopes to continue that success at Loyola University New Orleans where he has signed to play collegiately.
Congratulations to Robert Lovaglio, our Spotlight Athlete.
Rivers In A Class Of His Own
Winter Park guard Austin River is in a class of his own. He has the ability to make defenders miss with his incredible ball handling skills and ability to drive the lane, but it doesn't stop there.
Rivers, son of Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers, can also shoot the rock, tallying 23 points in both the state semifinal and championship games.
After falling short in last year's state semifinals to Olympia, the junior basked in the moment. When someone asked how long he was going to carry around the championship trophy, he said excitedly, "as long as my coach lets me."
Ranked one of the top players in the class of 2011, Rivers is currently committed to the University of Florida but Coach K's Duke Blue Devils are also in the running for his services.
Great news for Wildcat fans, he still has one more year.
Congratulations to Austin Rivers and Winter Park on a fantastic season.
